This learning zone hosts resources to support Scottish health and social care staff and students in gaining knowledge and skills to best protect antimicrobials (e.g. antibiotics) and prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance. The resources on this site have been co-produced by NHS Education for Scotland, the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) and many other contributors from health and social care.
Antimicrobials are the cornerstone of modern medicine and are used in the treatment and prevention of infections for millions of people worldwide. They are used in the treatment of minor and potentially life-threatening infections in humans and animals. They are used in support of surgery and modern cancer therapies. Organisms that become resistant to antimicrobials mean that treatments are less effective, causing harm to humans and animals. Resistant organisms can spread through people, animals, food and the environment, creating a major public health threat.
We need urgent action to preserve the antimicrobials we have available today, by improving how they are used and avoiding unnecessary use.
All health and social care staff need to work together to provide the best possible care. This means working across different care pathways and care settings, wherever care is delivered.
This learning zone hosts resources on antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship to improve visibility and accessibility for learners.
In this Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Zone you will find:
A knowledge and skills framework on containing and controlling antimicrobial resistance covering 6 domains (Version 1, 2025)
Supporting learning resources for the different domains of the framework
